1) Increase your fluid
2) Increase the amount of soluble and insoluble fiber in your diet, or alternately, you can take a product like Metamucil
3) Start or continue a good and vigorous program of physical exercise.
4) ALWAYS go sit on the toilet if you ever feel the urge to go have a bowel movement, do not ignore it or it will go away.

Water really helps. But if you need a medication, you should look for something that is a stool softener without the laxative. Some foods are a natural laxative. Not all things work the same for all people, but about 6 dried prunes will usually work for me. To prevent constipation, always eat plenty of fresh or dried fruit.

Fybogel is great. Natural fibre in a sachet. Add to water and drink. Very gentle. Available on prescription or from pharmacy.
Also try eating fresh pears.

If it has been going on a long time, a few days, try Ex-Lax but the minimal dosage if you never used it before. You could also try stool softeners. They're a lot less dramatic to your system.

seriously, try drinking a lot of liquids. Some foods are natural laxatives I think like some juices or chocolate. Take some anti-constipation medicine like a laxative.
