perhaps because of the misconception that it is sickenly sweet, cloyingly sweer....
or
not enough demand for the local stores to stock it
or
wine is plentiful and cheap
or
beer drinkers and hard liquor drinkers really don't go that far afield from their normal liquid libation
or
some folks don't even know what it is
or
limited taste, limited palate, limited culinary/libation range..

basically, the American palate, such as it is, is by and large...
bland...mac and cheese is "cuisine"....McDonald's?
american beer?

enjoy you mead....
just for something different
try
lemoncello....

enjoy

It's not a dessert wine.

It's a wine made from honey, but in the fermentation process, the sugars are consumed by the yeast so that it's not sweet any longer. It's like a dry wine/cider that has an undertone of honey left over.

It's closer to beer than it is to any dessert wine. It's a slow process and there are not many producers of mead...it's rather hard to find in general.

Mead wines come is a wide range of sweetness, from bone dry to very sweet (dessert style).

It isn't popular in general as a dessert wine or otherwise. It has a very unique flavor and it is not really commercially produced by any large wineries. Mostly made by smaller wineries with little or no advertising and limited distribution.

All they need is an advocate - sounds like you're the guy....

If I had to guess, few mass marketed brands and little demand.
If more people knew about it and could easily buy it, I bet it would take off.

The same goes for Barenjager which is a honey flavored liqueur.

Edit to add: Although not the best brand I've had, I can often find Chauser's Mead at Bevmo.

The only place you will find mead in this day and age is maybe at a Renaissance faire. Or if someone brews it at home. It's one of those things that people forgot about and so it eventually disappeared over the years.

Mead was most popular about 400 years ago. But you will find other versions of it -- for instance tej is an Ethiopian traditional honey wine that is served at most Ethiopian restaurants.

For desserts you want a wine that's subtle. I have never had a subtle mead.
