I am not a native English speaker, and my accent always shows whenever I try to match the accent of a Canadian English speaker.

However, when I speak English with a pirate accent, my native accent is barely noticeable. All of the linguistic prosidic aspects of my English improve when I culture such an accent. Why?

And does that mean that I should always use a pirate accent when I speak English to disguise that other accent?

Hmm mm a perplexing point. It depends what you deem as appropriate to whom you are speaking to. If you have a Russian accent, I personally think they add kudos to a person and make them seem tough, resilient and resourceful as these are generalities I associate with Russia. A pirate accent, to me would imply a smuggler and a thief. However these are all assumptions that I make based on my own limited knowledge. People will make assumptions based on what they think they know about the particular accent you have. Some people may get it wrong and think your pirate accent comes from somewhere else totally different and make a totally different set of assumptions based on what they think! So, my friend the short answer to a complicated question, is have a bit of fun and watch people's responses to your accents. It's good to confuse people and test them, it can add to the mystery of person as well!! Good luck.

You know, International Talk Like a Pirate Day was a couple of weeks ago. You should only speak with a pirate accent one day a year.

The rest of the time, use the charming accent you've got. Why disguise it? Isn't it useful in impressing young ladies? I should think it would be. It's an asset. Keep it.

That rules!!!

I think everyone learning English should be taught using a pirate accent!

Actually, I had a good friend who was from South America, he used to talk like a pirate often, but he still had his accent.

I say, pirate talk is awesome!!!

Well.... i bet your orignial accent sounds really cool, i like accents. And well if you like speaking like a priate well go for it, but there should be no reason to diguise your natural accent, i bet lots of people like it. My mom has a pretty big spanish accent i wouldn't want her to ever change it to something normal. : ) But if you sound like a real pirate you should be one for halloween!! : ) it's coming up you know! : )
