I have a friend that invited me to work out with him. I agreed to pay him a little money to help guide me through the process of working out since I'm new to it.

The first few weeks were great, but lately he's been showing up 15-20 minutes late with no excuse and no apology. This week, he has come everyday with an MP3 player and earphones in his ears. When I have a question, he takes the earphones out of his ears to hear me then answers my questions and puts them right back in.

Truthfully, this makes me feel like crap. I'm trying not to take this so personal and I don’t know that I would care as much if I was not paying him to "train" me.

So I guess the question is…. what is the etiquette for behavior when inviting someone to work out with you? Is it OK to do this stuff?

If you are paying him to train you then he should be giving you his undivided attention, answering your questions, and showing you what to do. If he can't do that then don't pay him.

If he is being paid, no, it is not the thing to do.
I would tell him thanks a lot, but you are OK now, and can manage on your own. If he asks why, tell him the truth. When you put the earphones in, I took that as a sign that you thought I could do this on my own.
If he was just going with you, it wouldn't be too rude, playing music is an accepted part of a work out. It would be polite to talk to you inbetween parts of the work out to see if you are OK, like the equipment or the gym, if it is a new place for you.

Think of it this way. You are giving him way too much freedom. So, to stop this, you must intervene and speak out. When he comes in say, "there must be something going on in your life or something must have happened because i'm noticing your late coming all the time" If he did come out with some white lie. Tell him that you need his full attention because you need to get "very toned" and want to have fun doing it. Tell him that u'll appreciate if he gives you the full attention.

Thank him for the service he initially provided, but that you feel confident now to go it alone.
