I had a root canel done 10 days ago and the pain is still the same. No change. 3 days ago my dentist gave me the strongest anti-biotics but it still did not help. As soon as the anti-biotics is gone (4-6 hours) the pain comes back just as much as it was 10 days ago. There is no relief at all. She did not take an X-ray to check my tooth. She just showed me the x-ray photo taken after the root canel done. She explained it might be due to a little extra cement filling left at the end of the root. And that might cause the pain. Then just asked me to continue the pain killers. I know she did something wrong but don't know what to do now. I think I'm another victim of a failed dental practice :(. And now she asked me to just sit & wait until the pain is gone. But the pain has not changed any little bit. Right before it's time for me to take another anti-biotics, the pain comes back as much as it was. I got Etna Ins & she used it up on me. Now I cannot afford to see another dentist:( Advise?

I did not know anythg abt a endodontist at all until now when it was too late. The dentist answered my call that the medication might not work for my pain thus gave me stronger ones, Ibuprofen, Metronidazone. It worked for now but I know the pain is still there very sharp if I stop taking the pills. The pain was so sharp that i almost headed to the emergency room. It run from the canel through my jaw, check & top of head. She did not check to see anything wrong with my tooth, but only stronger medication. I asked for the crown but she said no because it's not the problem of my pain. I guess it's because my insurance alowance is empty. I did pay her A LOT extra because my INS covers only 80%. I did not tell u abt my 1st root canel. It was a similar nightmare. It took the dentist 3 visits to remove all the root vessels (totally 6 hours). She said it was due to the abnormal positions of my root vessels that made it difficult for her to remove them??

PC, Yes, I had the nerve removed in 1 appointment but the canel was not filled UNTIL 3 WEEKS LATER (She was busy). Then she had a hardtime to fill the canels all the way down (1 hour). And it was a permanent filling, as told by her. I had 2 C-sections before but the surgery pain was nothing in compared to this canel pain. I don't know whattodo now. If I have to see another dentist it would cost me a fortune because I have to pay from my own pocket. No more money in my Insurance balance. Also, another question, does the price of a root canel cover the whole procedures until it's done regardless how many visits? it seemed like she charged me extra for every addtional visits because the previous ones were not successful. i PAID A LOT EXTRA, like totally more than $500 for each root canel, eventhough my Ins paid 80% already. She charged me for every visit even though she was not successful last 3 times trying to remove the nerve of my other root canel

I wish I had known of an Endodontist . I did not have any idea there is a Specialist of root canel and my dentist did not recommend me to any! She did not put a crown on my tooth yet. She said she will do it NEXT year when my Insurance is full. So I will have no crowns until 3 months later. Do you think this is right?

Forfot to say that she removed the roots 3, 4 weeks before the nerve filling. And during this 3,4 weeks, there was NO pain at all. My tooth is just as normal UNTIL she filled the nerves. This pain just started since she filled in the nerves. Fatima, I also heard that the pain is supposed to last only 2, 3 days after a root canel. Now you are a dentist and you said that it is not common for people to still experience pain after having had a root canal done, I can be sure my pain is not normal. Should I ask her to redo it? or to seek another dentist? My sister-inlaw & husband is very upset and ask me to hold her for responsibility but I cannot stay strong to confront her like that. What should I ask her for now? Also I did not have my eyes operated. I had 2 C-sections when laboring my kids.

I'm not going to comment on if your dentist did a proper job of the root canal or not because there is no way of knowing that without seeing the tooth and x-rays. It does sound like you are in pain & that is not normal 10 days after the root canal. I would calmly call your dental office on Monday and ask for a referral to an endodontist. If they ask why, let them know that you are still in pain and would like a specialist to look at it. Yes, you will have to pay out of pocket for this visit, but maybe the specialist can answer your questions about this tooth. Please be calm and mature when dealing with your dentist; it may be something completly different then this tooth that is causing the pain. Just today, I had a patient who had a root canal done a year ago and he's been in pain ever since. We've taken x-rays and all looked well. Today, took another x-ray, it still looked good, so we looked at other teeth. Well, come to find out, it was a tooth next to the root canaled one that needed attention. Good luck & I hope this gets worked out for you.

If you truly believe she did something wrong theIn you should invest at most $100 in getting a second opinion, especially because root canals are not cheap and you would want to hold her responsible, if indeed she is.
I am a certified dental assistant and Licesnsed hygienist, and I will tell you that it is not common for people to still experience pain after having had a root canal done. I know a root canal specialist that recommends you give the tooth two months before you can declare that there is actually another problem, such as if you have a fractured root, in that case the pain would not subside and these fractures are not always evident on xrays, sometimes you can't see them until the you actually extract the tooth.
You state that once it is time for you to take the antibiotic the pain comes back again, this cannot be since the antibiotic is not a pain killer, it is killing infection if indeed there is one, and once the antibiotic has begun killing the infection, there is no on and off period of it working. For pain you should be taking the pain prescription. You could even be clenching your teeth because something feels different in the mouth now so you are clenching (biting down hard) without even realizing it and that may be what is actually causing you the pain.
Actually, your insurance is Aetna. And denatl offices HATE when people rely soley on their dental insurance. Your teeth are just as important as any other part of your body, if your eyeball had been operated on and was causing you so much pain, wouldn't you go see another Dr. just to make sure. You would invest in any other body part, so why not your tooth? If it is really bothering you that much go to another Dr. and have them take an X-ray, because yes she should have taken one. If you are clenching, place some warm compresses on your cheek and take some advil.
One more piece of advice, do not go to a group practice, you need to see a private dentist that owns their own practice.

I got three teeth removed all on the top 3 days ago. sixth tooth on the left side, fourth tooth on the right side, sixth tooth on the right side. The procedure was painless the only thing i felt was a lot of pressure. I had Novocaine though. When the procedure was done (or all they could do, another tooth was going to be removed but i had to much Novocaine and i could still feel the dentist pressing against the tooth) They gave me medical gauze and a paper with directions on what to do after the extraction, and prescriptions for painkillers. The areas that the teeth were extracted were bleeding for about an hour after the extraction and it was very uncomfortable. But when I got home the bleeding slowed down and stopped, the pain was still very great. So I took one of the pills that was prescribed and after awhile. The pain went away.

See if your general practitioner can prescribe something. I had this happen to me as well & was also told to wait until the nerve completely dies off...it is SERIOUSLY painful...my eyes water in sympathy for you. The dentist didn't get all of the nerve (happens sometimes) and it will die off eventually. Ask your primary care if they can give you some pain killers...it's gonna take a couple more weeks, sorry to say :-( My first guess was a dry socket, but not if you've seen the dentist since the extraction.

The advice I would tell u is speak to a pharmacist about the pain. They maybe advise u on what u could possible take and if u need a prescription, call your dentist to call it in. Does your dentist have an associate that works with her. If so take an apt. with them to check it out. The last resort would be if u cannot get to your own physician because of money go to the clinic or er. Your health is worth it at all costs.
