I was pulled over by f@!k head of a police officer, who, for the record, was hiding, with nothing to do-- good thing I'm not bitter. I have a current insurance card and a valid license, but I've maybe, kinda, lagged on renewing my registration. I thought you only got a ticketed for such a violation-- but now I am being heard you can be towed. I am in grad school in Jersey and have plates from Colorado. He let me go, saying that I needed to go the next day and register the car or he would "tow it out of my driveway" It only got worse from there... i just want to know what the law, in my reluctant home, says.

Since it's against the law to operate an unregistered vehicle on public roads, the cop can have the vehicle towed. If he let you go without towing it, count your blessings -- he's anything but a f@!k head as you put it.

He probably can't tow it from a private driveway but he can have it towed if it's on the street or in a common use are such as a private apartment complex parking lot.

If you're a grad student, you're allegedly smart enough to know better. Get the car registered -- and don't put it on a public road until you do!

I have heard from a friend that this is true, because my friend has an unreg'd car in her ddriveway just sitting there and she was told by a cop to reg it or it COULD be impounded. Dont ask my how they can come on private property to remove something that is titled to you. I think that people should follow laws and rules, but I dont get the driveway thing.

It sounds like you got lucky maybe you should just reg it to be on the safe side. It is the law.
