7pm or 8pm.

I think it depends on the child. My son, for instance, is a morning person. He'll conk out no problem at 8pm if he's tired. He is 7, and his bedtime is 9pm, though some nights he goes to bed earlier.

My two daughters are both night owls, though my youngest is also a morning person. She's an odd ball.

My oldest daughter had a bed time of 9pm when she started school, so at 5 YO. She's got a 10pm bedtime now, at 10. But that's because she'd lay there wide awake anyway. We have her read from 9pm until 10pm every night, though, too.

Our 4 year old goes to bed at different times. See, she's the morning/night owl kid. She also doesn't go to school until 12:45, and she still takes naps some days. If she has not had a nap, it's 9pm. Other wise, we're more lenient about letting her go to bed when she gets sleepy, but no later than 9:30-9:45ish. We try to keep her on a semi-looked after schedule. Doesn't always work, though. She's also got bad ADHD, and a perpetual motion disorder where she is constantly moving when she's awake. If we are riding in a car, she bounces in her booster seat. At night, she bounces her body against the matteress to fall asleep.

Everyone is going to give you a specific time. My answer is based on conversations with three pediatricians.

Everyone, including children, needs a certain amount of sleep. This varies from person to person. It varies from time to time.

It does not matter when the person gets that amount of sleep so long as they get it.

You should have an idea of what amont of sleep your child needs.

Now routine is important also--especially when school age.. It is good that there be a regular basic time to go to bed--which is determined by how much sleep your child needs and when they need to (or you think they should) get up.

does your child go to school?
My daughter is 5 and goes to all day kindergarten.
she is in bed by 7:00 pm. but does not go to sleep right away, she usually reads or plays with her babies, as long as she is chilled out and in bed by 7 we have not had any problems with school or with her getting up in the morning (at 6:30) we have a nice relaxed breakfast and get ready for school.
hope this helps,
sorry for rambling on. :)

5 year olds need a least 11 hours of sleep per night, I put my 5 and 7 year old to bed at 7:30.

My 5 y.o. daughter starts her bed time routine at 8:30pm. She's an early bird (gets up at 6:30 -7am) and doesn't take any naps. I've read it is necessary for kids to sleep 10 hours during night.
It works great for all of us - she is happy, healthy and full of energy during the day and my husband and i have time on our own at the evenings.

Depends what time they get up and how much sleep they need. It's good to be moving them towards early bedtimes and early mornings by the time they have to get up for school.

My son went to bed around 9 at that age. If he stayed up later he got cranky, but if he went to bed sooner he was up way too early.

I have a little sister and since she has just started kindergarten she goes to bed at 7:30 pm. I hope you like that time.
