I think they are fabulous and I wish more people moved through the planet that way. I find Andrew's response to be extremely sad. I know people in their 50's 60's and 70's who backpack because they feel it is the most genuine way to be in another culture and meet the real people, etc. It is unfortunate that Andrew's misguided perception had him miss out on adventure. Personally, if someone is healthy then I say throw on that pack and I wish them a joyful journey! Personally, I have travelled with as little as a daypack and the freedom from being encumbered by luggage was delicious!

Andrew's answer sucks!! When I turned 30 2 year ago, my 26-yr old friend bought me a ticket to Paris and we went backpacking around Europe for 3 weeks!!! We started in Paris, then to Brussels, Amsterdam, Berlin and flew to London. Backpackers are not always in their young 20s.. If I can do it again, I will!!!! No matter whether I am 32-35-40.. whatever..
Backpacking is for young people at heart! You can be 20 but if you are acting like a grumpy 40-yr old guy, then you are 40!!

nothing - except if they are out of their 20's -- then they would be bums . Its something you do in your 20's or if possible at 18 or 19 years of age. Its something you do when you cant afford to stay in a hotel or B and B but its okay in your 20's . If someone cannot afford B and Bs or motels or hotels in their 30's or up then they are in a very sad state. Someone asked me if I wanted to backpack through Europe last summer - start in Scotland and go from there. I am 36 years of age - It would have been so awkward and embarrassing. All the backpackers would have been 20 something and I would have been the old geezer -- f ****** that.
