All communications with banks, stores, and many businesses, whether in person or over the phone, are recorded using audio and video equipment. Sometimes a government agency will set up a sting operation to catch a suspect in the act. There are numerous ways that law enforcement, with full cooperation of the credit card companies and vendors (business owners) can work together to catch a thief. Comparing signatures is not the only way to catch a thief. Depending on the value of the merchandise stolen through use of a credit card, a person is charged with either a misdemeanor or a felony theft charge. Most states and the federal government can also charge a person with use of a stolen electronic device, card or identification.

In many instances the federal government gets involved because it is a white collar crime (embezzeling is also a white collar crime). In the State I live in, the prosecuting agency is called the 'Office of Special Prosecutions." If you suspect someone of stealing a credit card, you should report it immediately. I've seen instances where a person knew about it, and didn't report it, and that person was charged with aiding and abetting. If you receive goods that were stolen or were from use of a stolen credit card, you can be charged with receiving stolen goods.

Theft is a serious crime and can affect your entire future. Many companies do background checks on prospective employees and if they see you have a conviction for theft, they could decide not to hire you. Also, if you apply for a government job they will do a background check and you won't be hired if you have a conviction.

Ohhh my ex did this! The credit card companies are the ones who prosecute however they won't even pursue it unless more than 2,000 was stolen. It is cheaper for them just to write it off. The second option is that the person whose credit was stolen can turn you in for identity theft and or theft. If the person charged more than 1,000 it is a felony.
