It's a poem. It isn't so much about the raven, as about someone going nuts, as with all of Poe's writing.

The Raven is a common symbol of death in literature. The raven stood for his lost-love Lenore and the fact that he would see her "Nevermore."

as you know Edgar Allan Poe wrote scary movies and the raven, is a big black bird, which looked very spooky, and mysterious, it was a setting for his shows,hope this helps.

i think the raven is meant to symbolize the conscious and inner demons of the character. Why he chose a raven to be the bird, maybe because it is black and has a stigma of evil that surrounds it.

It was a symbol of the lost (dead) love, Lenore, which is what the poem is really about. A raven visits him while he's mourning her and keeps saying "Nevermore," as in, you'll never see her again.
