I woke up this morning to get ready for work and I had noticed my canary sitting at the bottom of her cage sleeping. Before I left I went to go pick her up to put her back on the bar and she wasnt responding normaly. When I woke her up she started gasping for air and died right there in my hands. Besides being emotionally up set for losing her I have been racking my brain all day trying to figure out what happend to her...She was a 2 year old canary, but she was also a misfit. Before I lost her she had been doing alot of sleeping the past month. Other than that she would eat and sing. Anybody know??

Canaries can lived up to 17 years with good tender and loving care...
This birds are very sensitive to food changes and MOSQUITO bites...they get sick from it and dies suddenly..
It is very tragic to see that happening in your hands.

i am really sorry to hear that you have lost her and only hope that anything i can add may ease the fact that you no longer have her.My grandmother kept canaries for many years and as a child growing up untill a few years ago i was in very close contact with them. There is one canary my gran had that springs to mind as it seems similar to your circumstances.
We had cleaned the caged out one day but had raised the perching branch higher than usual and in the morning had found quite a few dead on the floor of the cage the following day,the vet had said it would have been a heart attack they had suffered as they are quite fragile. I hope this is of some help to you

I'm soooooo sorry for your loss :( Canaries don't live very very long. But other than nature, it could be a few things. Perhaps she was too close to a draft/ac? Canaries are prone to that, they don't like weather changes or winds. Perhaps diet? If she lived on just seed, not enough round diet? Perhaps she had something abnormal inside, like an enlarged heart. So many possibilities. They are so suceptable to things, like the poison gasses put off by nonstick cookware. Perhaps her cage was zinc (old). Who knows. But I am truly sorry for you. :(

No, unfortunately I don't know what happened but I have had the same thing happen...just unexpectedly...I think canarys are really prone to respiratory problems though....the sleeping in the past month should have been your clue that something wasn't right...but I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
