Please tell me that your 5 1/2 month old child is still getting MOST of his nutrition (if not all) from either breast milk or formula.
They do not NEED anything else until at least 6 months.
Even from 6-12 months breast milk or formula should be their PRIMARY source of nourishment, although supplemented gradually with rice cereal/pablum, baby food veggies, and then baby food fruits. Teething biscuits like Farley's are also better before you introduce ones like arrowroot, hard pieces of which can break off and choke them if given too young.
(If you introduce much fruit before they get used to veggies, your kid may refuse or hate veggies.)
Good luck!

If he has already been eating the rice cereal for a little while I would give it to him 2 times a day. If not just start him out 1 time a day and see how he does with that. Then increase to 2 times a day in a couple of weeks.

When I started my three out on rice cereal I liked to give them 2-4 ozs in the morning and 2-4 ozs at night. Then around 6 mo or so I started giving veggies for lunch.

i always gave my kids cereal in the morning, and a fruit or veggie at lunch and dinner at 5 1/2 months....but only start them on one fruit or veggie at a time....i started my kids on peaches for like three or four days to make sure they didn't have a reaction and did that with all the different kinds until i know that they were not allergic....but if you are not ready to do that yet give them cereal in the morning and maybe some at dinner time...

At 5 1/2 months, your baby should just now be starting on cereals. Baby food should wait until the Doctor okays it or another couple months. Once at night, to help him sleep through the night, is sufficient for most babies that age. You may want to do twice a day, but he should still mainly be getting nutrition through milk.

I would give him the cereal twice a day and start introducing fruits with the cereal. One week just apples then the next week just bananas and so on. after you have introduced the fruit start on the veggies. By 9 months you should have him on meat products (white meat first)
But he should eat cereal in the morning and in the afternoon.

How much each time? Be careful of constipation with rice cereal. Make sure he's having at least one bm a day. If he gets constipated, make the cereal using baby apple juice instead of milk.

I would say at least 3 times a day as long as he is still drinking his milk and if he is still hungry feed him more.

I use to just mix it in my daughters bottles at every feeding it keeps them full longer so they cry for the bottle less.
