Some animals do this to hide their food from other animals, and to hide the food from anyone they percieve might take it from them, even you! As they see that the dish "dissapears" might be a percieved threat, so try not to remove it when filling it, rather, bring the food to the bowl to offer reassurance to your pet that it is indeed in a safe environment and try to sit with your pet AT the place of feeding and offer ton and tons of treats, etc and love to your pet so that it will asssociate comfort and love at that place, not worry, stress or fear. Hope that you will get some good help with my suggestions, as it helped my cat when she was acting strange for a time.

Cats do it to protect their leftovers. If it's a new behavior, see what has changed in her environment. My mom's cat has started to do the same thing because my cat is coming out of her closet much more since my mom's dog died. If you know what's bothering her, you can take steps to reassure her. For my mom's cat, we make sure he has time to eat when my cat is in another room so he won't feel threatened. Depending on the situation, you may want to move the food dish to a more secluded spot or feed her at a different time or just pay her some special attention so she feels that her food won't be stolen.

why does your cat eat her food and tries to cover it over like her tray?
your cat can´t manage to cover her food with her tender, small feet so she does it with her tongue and keep her food covered from flies
and prevent her food from germs.Animals are intelligent too and have their hygiene.

my does the same thing! First she tries hiding the food with paper or anything she can bring over & then she uncovers & eats! She scratches at the floor by her bowls & tries coverin'em. Maybe she wants to keep it fresh?

She's hiding it to protect it. She will come back later, uncover it and eat it. Just like a wild animal would hide food from other animals.

Cats cover their food to protect it from other predators. In other words she doesn't want to share with you. My cats do it to, I think its weird that they hid their food from me but bring mice back as gifts.

I suspect it is trying to hide it so that it can go back to it later without the fear that it is going to be taken from it. One of my cats trys to hide the others dish so that it can have it later.

Cats are unexplainable creatures. Mine acts that way when she is drinking from her water dish, always scratching at the floor. I gave up trying to figure her out!
