My nephew & I are in a disagreement. When typing a letter or a term paper, at the end of a sentence do you space 1 time or 2 times after a period? I thought it was twice after a period & once after anything else.

When I went to school, it was two spaces after a period at the end of a sentence. Nowadays, however, I think it's also acceptable to use only one space. So either way would be correct, and you are both right.

Actually, I prefer the two spaces because it just looks better. But I think the reason for one is that it saves space and time. We live in a faster world now. And like everything else, things constantly change as a matter of speed and efficiency.

This is a question of style. Usually is just like you stated, 2 times after a period once after anything else.

When I was in university 25 years ago, the convention was 2 spaces between sentences. As far as I know, nothing has changed. In formal written communications, I still use 2 spaces.

You're correct. It's two spaces after a period, question mark or exclamation mark. It's one space after a comma, semicolon, or colon.

It depends on what type of citation style you are using. You need two spaces if you are using MLA for english paper. You need only one for APA, which is used prevalently in social sciences.

Hope this helps :)
