I have some very good friends who are police officers, but recently in the Orlando area a man shot and killed a officer. They shut down an entire county to find the killer and eventually shot and killed the suspect. The entire police force and swat teams from 3 counties were outr search for one man. They also shut down 3 area high schools and caused a 35 mile traffic backup. This was awesome as they got thier man, but how is the life of one officer any different than yours or mine? Should they not put forth the same effort when you or I are assulted...I think not, We deserve the same justice as any other human being. Seperating the police from our society only causes a largfer riff than what already exists...
I hope the police understand the image they are creating for themselves. If you are in the Ghetto or a Rural area, you are lucky to get a officer sent out for a robery....

I agree with Aviator on this one. Aside from the fact of the police have a personal connection to the killing of a fellow officer, the simple fact is that a criminal that has shot and killed a police officer is far more dangerous to both law enforcement and the public than someone who has shot and killed a civilian. In almost every state, the intentional killing of a police officer is a capital crime (aka death penalty), so the suspect has absolutely nothing to lose. There is nothing that the suspect won't do in order to evade capture, which includes killing more people. The police must be on "high alert" because they know the suspect will not hesitate to pull the trigger the next time he is confronted by law enforcement. The police pull out all the stops when someone kills a fellow officer for the safety of both the public and law enforcement.

Most of these answers are on target, but there is one more aspect. It's the brotherhood. When an officer is in a dangerous situation and calls for help, the other officers drop everything and respond. They do this because they may be in the same situation someday. This brotherhood is strong and carrys over even after it's too late and an officer has been killed. Don't mess with the police. They will win.

Everyone matters, but when an officer is shot they will act as if it's more important for a very good reason. If someone is willing to shoot and kill a police officer, they'd be willing to shoot anyone. The shooter is a very big threat to everyone on the streets if they are left to roam. It has nothing to do with it being a friend or anything else. Every police officer knows that when he leaves home in the morning he may not be coming back. Not everyone is willing to make a sacrifice like that, especially for a city of people that they don't even know half of the people. Most people when thinking clearly wouldn't assault an officer. So when someone does assault an officer or even kills one it shows that person has no concern for theirs or anyone elses life.

I think the biggest reason is the lack of respect for authority the suspect has shown. Most people who commit murders, while they want to get away, will surrender to police when they are caught. This is usually because they do have some respect for human life, just not toward the person they killed. When a person has shot a police officer, they have shown that they have absolutely no respect for anyone, including police. This means they are willing to kill anyone who gets in their way. This makes them more dangerous in the eyes of the police.

If someone is willing to take on a person who has had the best training available in self-defence, has intimate knowledge of the law and how it's applied, is legally justified to carry and employ an array of weapons that include some which will produce deadly physical force, in order to commit an infraction of the law that nearly everyone else respects, then that someone has exhibited what they call a depraved indifference to human life. The Police concentrate of animals like that to keep YOU safe.

Christina D has it. If someone is willing to kill armed, trained Police Officers, they would obviously be a clear and present danger to the general public. Someone who's not afraid of the Police is someone who needs to be found as quickly as possible.
Now, is there something "personal" in it as well? Surely. There always is, when it's someone you know. Think about it: when you hear that "somebody's" car got stolen, you don't like it; but when you hear that your best friend's car got stolen, it matters a lot more to you. It's personal for you now.
It's the same way with the Police.

They are offering the same protection to the general public. Think about it. If you are crazy enough to shoot a police officer, then what's to stop you from shooting anyone and everyone. The reason they went through such great lengths was to protect everyone (including themselves) from a madman, not for vengeance.

It can be assumed that someone who will kill a police officer will do anything, if they are willing to kill an armed officer what will they do to anyone else.
They can normally be considered more dangerous than almsot any other level of criminal

If I shot your nieghbor, you might run and hide. If I shot your best friend you might try to kill me. Picture that with weapons training. Police aren't robots, they're people. And I don't have a problem with that.

Because in order to keep order they must project fear. If someone thinks they can get away with killing a cop like killing an average person... There'd be more dead cops.
It's a fear factor.
