Yes there are ordinances for the dead as well as the living.

1 Cor. 15: 29
29 Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead?

John 5: 25-29
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.
26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him aauthority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
29 And shall acome forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation

Regarding John 5:25-29
When Christ's body was in the tomb for three days his spirit was in the spirit world setting up the missionary work that is required by divine law and justice that "all that are in the grave shall hear his voice. Hence, "else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead if the dead rise not at all..."
There is but one religion that holds to the doctrine of baptism for the dead, and only one that has the authority to do so.

That's how the dead are helped.
Baptism is an earthly ordinance and can only be performed on earth by those having the authority from God to do so. A PhD in theology does not give man authority to baptize in the name of Christ. This authority comes in and through the priesthood of God.

I believe you can pray for God to have mercy on the dying, but don't know that you can help the dead. Jesus did, and the Bible says that we can do all that Jesus did if we believe. I don't know.
