This so cool. I wanted to knwo the same thing and this is the answer I got.

Animals circlebefore they sleep as a natural instinct that predates animals living inside. They are actually nesting. The circular motion is meant to wear the ground down into an even spot and actually help them nustle into leaves, hay, grass etc. It is a basic instinct that is very similar to how we make and unmake our beds. He is just making his bed for the night and it is relaxing and natural for them to do so.

Dogs are descended from Wolves, and wolves live in the wild. To make a bed they turn in circles to pat down the snow or leaves and many dogs-such as setters and wolfhounds-will do this as if they were still in the wild.

You have to remember they are still animals and have instincts. In the wild wolves and wild dogs will walk in circles in leaves or grass to make a bed.

Well do you fluff your pillows before you sleep?? The dog is looking for a comfy position to lay in.

She's making her 'nest' just as we do. Ever fluff and move your pillow? How about getting your blanket 'just right? Ever move around till you get in a 'comfortable position? That's what she's trying to do.
