My college art history professor said that every style of art goes through three stages: primitive, classic, and Baroque (overdone). Someone starts the style and at first it's okay but not very refined. After a while it becomes refined or classical. Then eventually people start to get tired of it and embellish it with extra things like complex patterns, to the point where it's overdone. That's Baroque. Then someone starts up a different style with a new idea and the whole cycle starts again. Or they look back to previous styles and do a revival of those, often with a twist. Some art history buffs have a more stringent definition, calling only the most ancient Greek and Roman art classical.

Classical art is the art from classical period in Greece. But there was two revivals of classical art in history: Once in renaissance and once again in Neoclassical period, around 1800. Because of the French Revolution, people wanted to abolish the decandence of Rococo/monarchy in favor of democracy, hence the use of Greek style.

Classical art is art that is contemporary and it can also be art that was done long ago. You can go to www.allposters.com for some excellent examples, if you find something that you really like you can buy right there on the spot for not that much money.
