I'm certain that if it had opium in it, it wouldn't have been sold as recently as 2 years ago. MANY drinks had drugs in them, (cocaine in Coca-Cola), but drug laws in the early 20th century forced those drugs out such drinks. Jaegermeister DIDN'T have opium in it as recently as 1920, even.

The exact list of the 56 herbs used to make Jägermeister is kept secret. The story I always hear is it is opium based, have no way to verify but that's what I have heard since 1988 or so.

jagermiester tastes alot like paragoric... an opium based medicine that used to be perscibed to for colicky children even as late as the 1970's... that may be the origin of that particular urban legend. it is apparently still perscribed for diarreah... hmm go figure
