Personally, I think that it depends on what you like to do, what you're good at, and what you value.
Some people really value helping individuals with their problems, so counseling / therapy is a great idea.
Some really value educating and teaching.
Some really value discovery and science and thus, research is a great idea.
Personally, I'm a little more interested in 2 and 3 than one, so it's easy to say that a position in academia is the "best" but it really depends on you.

Well, for a psychologist you could be a practicing psychologist (meaning you have patients), a social worker, or of course a teacher.
With a degree in philosophy, your options are slightly more limited. You could always go to law school, of course, but I would imagine that education would be the best way to have steady work.
