heres an example of 5 mins of research in yahoo autos,

this is just an example, the Toyota Camry is about the best car (Honda Accord is right up there too) and both are real solid, substantial cars, of course there are other good choices, but these are mine, search your area, stay under 100K miles, get the car from a used car dealer that offers some kind of guarantee, get a 1 owner vehicle if possible (but not essential), the most important thing- was it taken care of??? If so these cars will go (Toyota & Honda) another 100K miles, for $1500 you can't expect perfection, ask the dealer what has been done to it, did he check the brakes? is the exhaust system ok, it would be GREAT if you brought it to an impartial mechanic for him to go over it, have him make a LIST of everything that needs to be done and make the dealer do them or WALK, THIS CAR (link) looks like a possibility, BUT its been painted and may be hiding body rust/rot, remember its in NY (salt) after all, your mechanic will tell you if the body is decent, search within 50 or even 100 miles of where you live to improve your odds of finding something, use your local mechanic for repairs, the one that checked it out, make sure the tires have Good tread, insist the dealer get a sticker on it before you buy it, if he says no WALK! You can do it! OH, getting one of those Vehicle History Reports is a good idea, in my opinion the dealer ought to pay for it, but you can't do that on every car you look at (if it comes out of your pocket).

There are no correct answers for your questions. It varies. But I will tell you to be extremely cautious of cars with very low miles on them. In the case of a 1993, say less than 50,000. I have no doubts it was only driven by a little old lady on Sundays. But cars need to be used. Otherwise, things such as the rubber, begin to rot. The car may start out great, but within a couple months things will start to go bad very fast.

You can do quite a bit of reseach on www.autotrader.com for used cars in your price range. I would suggest Toyota Corolla or Honda Civic or Accord as a brand as I purchased serveral older high milelage ( over 100K - 300K ) vehicles over the years that the former owner had cared for properly ( and had the paperwork to back it up), that are still running to this day! Be sure and have a certified ASE technician or repair center do an inpection before you buy and run a www.CARFAX.com report for a history on the vehicle before you buy.

Be sure and do ALL the required maintenance and service on your high mileage cars to make them last and last.......

any car that's 1993 or newer, and only costs $1500 is going to be a piece of CRAP.

you need to be looking at spending AT LEAST $2000, probably closer to $3000 if you want something decent.

you want to make sure it passes smog, does not overheat, has working AC (if that's important to you), and has decent tires.

Make sure the car has tires and an engine first of all. Make sure the engine runs and does not smoke. Drive the car before purchase. It would be best to have a mechanic look at it before deciding
