i am armenian and i living in armenia i have many iranian friends and they told me.wine is come from shiraz( i think shiraz the name of city in iran) originaly and now t best wine who produce in australia named shiraz or sheeraz is that true?

The name of the grape Shiraz was taken from that of the city of Shiraz in Persia/Iran, where the process of wine making possibly originated 7000 years ago. The archaeological evidence unearthed at the site of Hajji Firuz Tepe in northwestern Iran has firmly established that the wine itself has originated in the Kurdish regions of that country around seven thousand years ago.

Shiraz or Syrah is a variety of grape used in wine. The names are interchangeable, although the original nomenclature is Shiraz.It is called Syrah in France and most often in the United States. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada it is most commonly known as Shiraz. In Australia it used to be called Hermitage up to the late 1980s. It should not be confused with Petite Sirah, a synonym for Durif, which is a different type of grape. It got its name from Shiraz--the city of flowers, wine and poetry in Persia/Iran--in the heart of an ancient winemaking region.
