It's more that if your traveling is going to make it difficult for you to fast (imagine crossing a desert on a camel for days without being able to drink any water during the day), then you can postpone those fast days to another time. But your friend should be able to fast. Sitting on an airplane or in a car is no more strenuous than working in the office, etc. He may choose to break it anyway.

I agree that if you can manage to fast you should, lost of us prefer to continue fasting if we are flying. If I have to drive alone, I seriuosly consider because I am likely to fall asleep, otherwise same as above. I think it was the times of Prophet Muhammad PBUH when they would travel on camel back in the deserts that they allowed not to fsat while travelling. With that reference if he did not fast, he should still be okay, just have to fast at a later time to catch up on the total count of the month, peace

From my understanding , if the person can manage the fast the he /she should keep the fast.
If you travell a far distance then it is not compulsory that one has to fast on that day but that fast has to be made up at a later date after ramadan.

yes u can break ur fast for this reason, and the rule is everyday u travel or are sick or for a woman has a period is one day you have to make up at another day during the remainder of the year so if he doesnt fast tommorrow he will have to make it up on another day.....things that break ur fast are travelling, being sick, being old or too young, pregnancy, periods, stuff like that.

Travellers are not required to fast.
It is up to you to follow the rules as you interpret them.
I am not a Muslim, but when I lived in Saudi Arabia, wealthy Muslims would find a reason to travel during Ramadan so they could avoid fasting. And, they weren't riding camels...
