I wonder about this myself, when reality smacks people in the face, but they still repeat a phrase from bible contrary to all reason. I think the main answer is Fear. people are afraid of death, dying, what happens after etc etc
Most people lack the intellectual curiosity to seek answers - much easier to go-along to get along. secondly I think many people live in a state of denial. Life is just too hard. and most lack self-honesty - the courage to say Ï just dont know if there is a god", the fact being that nobody DOES know. I hope there is, but I'm not killing anybody over it.
God gave me a brain, and I intend to use it. the bible is a historical document. It tells me opinions of a culture that lived in the desert, kept slaves, fought wars, and treated women as less than human. I would be INSANE to pattern my life in this century after only their culture. This is not to dismiss the value of exploring their lives and struggles and attempts to find/define god. which by the way, if you actually read the bible, is quite schizophrenic. God of love, god of war?
I thank you for the opportunity to express some of these thoughts. Kept exploring! I think it makes you more fully human, and in my humble opinion, closer to the true god.

We don't know there is a God, it is called faith. There is nothing wrong with exploring other theories, it is called gathering knowledge, what, I think, God intended us to do with these big brains he gave us. A person with a well-rounded education studies other beliefs and theories. They do not have to accept them. Knowing and accepting are not the same things.Fanatical leaders, of religion, government, ususally ban beliefs that are not there own, they think, and maybe accurately, that people will not follow them, will turn away and take their money with them. For instance, the communists abolish religion, they know they can't compete with God and religion. They both ask for blind faith, or obedience, saying that to look for other knowledge is the same as not believing, and the religious tell you won't go to heaven unless you have true [blind] faith. The govenment sends you to Siberia, or kills you.
The Bible was written by men who lived 2000 years ago. They wrote it according to their beliefs, and the education and knowledge available at the time. Some people believe that God guided their hands, gave them the actual words. That is their belief.
Theories abound about the Old Testament, and the New. Even the big bang theory has changed, and may again, as new information becomes available, as science invents new machines to help us.
No, again, it is faith that the man called Jesus did the things the Bible says he did. We were not there, 2000 years ago. All we can do is study, and decide for ourselves. Or accept a theory. or follow the path of the faithful.
Get a copy of The Shoes of The Fisherman. Great movie, it is about a priest who was imprisoned for his beliefs, was released, and made a Pope. He was, in the movie, the first Pope from a communist country. Life often imitates the movies. The ending is really thought provoking, I will not tell you what it is!

I remain wide open for this answer and am not foolish enough to believe anything without proof.
I was once told in school in a maths lesson to stop questioning and to start accepting the stated, it might have held me back a bit but I still want to know before I can accept.
Now we are told that the old maths teaching was not 100% correct. If we did not question we would not correct and advance our knowledge.
We have jumped leaps with the use of a calculator, so that we can gain more time advancing in just maths, but many other fields must be advanced to enable us to give better analysis and results of all things in life both past and future.

Every archaeological discovery in the Middle East in relation to what the Bible records has supported the truth of its contents, not contradicted it. The Bible has remained constant over the centuries, whereas scientists have had to revise a great many of their views. You sound very confused and very unhappy about your confusion. Is there a Christian bookshop near you where you could read about the things which are perplexing you at the moment? Is there an Alpha course being run by any church nearby which you could attend? Why not discuss your worries with your priest or minister to see what he/she can suggest? Don't give up: there is too much at stake! God bless you!

I'm a christian and I've also looked at other faiths and science, but I did it after I'd already met with Jesus. This was a definite experience, spiritual and pure, and after I'd had this experience I could look at all other theories in the light of knowing the truth, and weighing it up for myself.
There is a book called, 'in six days:why 50 scientists choose to believe in creation.' You should be able to find a copy if you are interested in a scientific view of creation.

You have to consider who wrote the various stories over a long period, many years ago, and how they become linked together.
The primitive tribes of that era lived in a totally different world to what we now know, and their beliefs were taken as gospel, so to speak. However, over the centuries the bible has been doctored to suit who was ever in control, and used to intimidate the poor and ignorant folk of this world. The catholics being the worst culprits in my mind.
So, over the years, children have been brainwashed into believing everything in the bible and got to rely on it for their daily lives. Therefore, it has become a paramount issue in people's lives. It just seems silly to me that so many people believe in something that cannot be proven, apart from the archeological facts that are now coming to light.

It is not right. wrong it is. christianity is a stolen religion, fairly new, and lets face it a rather good marketing ploy.
If only I had thought of that I might be richer than I am. the church eh! always pleading poverty asking for money and grants from public and private sector for what. do you need a toll fee to get through the pearly gates.
People do say that with my correct views I am a satanist, well I have news for you vicar, get your facts right if I were a satanist I would also be a practising christian as SATAN himself was your so called gods right hand man.
Therefore satanism is a christian based religion. are you reconsidering yet and starting to sway to paganism. as this is a true religion and you can worship the day, the season and gods you can see.
False icons who needs them, have a nice day and keep smiling. I do life is funl.

OK so I know theres a lot of things I'm not allowed to say in response to this question, so I'll have a go....
Christians believe the Bible is definitely right because it is part of CHristianity. When you 'choose' a religion, you accept its teachings. Part of Christian teaching is that the Bible is true.
Its just the same as Muslims believing the Koran (apologies if thats not spelt right - no offence meant!). Its just part of the belief system.

"Why do some Christians seem to think that the bible is definitely right and everything else it wrong?"
Because those Christians are the type who read The Sun and like having their personal opinions spoon-fed to them so they don't have to justify them, and when questioned can have a "valid" source. Never forget that the bible endorses slavery, (Leviticus 25:44) How valid can that source be in this day and age?

the bible like any other book was written by ordinary people they would have been a product of their time, and like most people it is their views on a given situation or their opinions on a topic they put on paper, leaving it open to anyones interpretation, But i have found that if you are given the answer "because the bible says so" it is because that person has no good answer.
