To protect muscles from damage during stretching, the nerves get supressed when a muscle is stretched. So that creates a relaxing effect on those muscles. I'm guessin that's why... It's also why we should warm up before exercise and then stretch AFTER and not before we exercise.. because it reduces coordination and strength for a short while..

it is the best thing in the world , when you stretch it's like giving your body a rest.
