Because when the beer is in a case, they cannot be easily opened whereas a single beer can be. And since in most cities and states, having an open container of alcohol in public is against the law, you cannot carry one around. (only exception I know of off the top of my head is Las Vegas, Nevada)

Plus, apparently they think if the beer is in a bag you wont drink it. Or more likely, people won't know what it is. Except of course 99% of the time when someone is drinking from a bottle in a brown paper bag it is an alcoholic drink.......

Just bag it and be done with it.

Not sure where you live but I have bought a beer and a soda and have walked out with just the two no little bag or anything. I always thought it was so if walk out open it and say walk down the street or something you won't get hassled for PI.

well I work at a grocery store and we don't put the beer in the paper bags.. just wine and liqueur.. the only law I know of is that wine and liqueur have to be in the paper bags because it's issued through the state that you live in.. different states have different laws

I would think that they give you the bag as a courtesy so you can hide the fact that you are drinking the beer in your car on the way home.

i think it has to do with that open liquor law...you can have a full six pack in the car but not 4 out of a six pack in the car...its pure crap...plus a case is usually 24 or more so they dont fit in a bag...

Open container law - the store does it for your protection.

I can walk out with a 6 pack in WA.
It's not an open container unless you open it.

That is a good question. I guess it's probably some outdated "decency law."
