some DVD players have problems reading some DVD-r's if you're talking about recordeable dvd's.

Two possibilities - either your motor is not working (meaning the disks aren't spinning) or your laser is dirty/burned out.
Try a DVD Head Cleaner. If that doesn't work, you'll probably just want to drop $50 on a new player, because it will cost you that much to have somebody look at the one you've got.

cleaning with a disc cleaner certanlly woulmt hurt.
