Excellent question and I think that the answer is D - none of the above. I just answered a question regarding the "dumbing down and indoctrination" of our children through the public school system. I believe that has much to do with your question. It is important to those in power to stay in power. People who are self aware and independent thinkers are hard to control. If the school system can continue to churn out good little mindless worker bees that will put their nose down and work hard to reach ever higher for the "american dream"...so much the better. Also, there are a great number of ppl who believe that it is their lot in life to shuffle along like zombies because their reward will be in "heaven". What an amazing dangling carrot theology that is, in which no one ever demands their money back when the product is not delievered, but instead blame themsleves! There are many factors that go into the condition described by your question, but at the root of it are those with power and those oppressed by it. The funniest thing is that most of the ones who are oppressed by their antiquated superstitious myths and/or the "consumer - keep up with the jones" mindsets, do not know they are oppressed and are trying so hard to get the rest of us on board.

not all of us are that way
but i do think many of us live life just because
i think we were ment for great things on this earth and some times we get distracted by the good sounds and the pretty colors of the world
i think that if we use the gifts that god gave us we all would be much happier
