In the letter dated November 1st, 2001 from the WT,explaining their reason for registering (?) with the UN, it says that the letter replaces any replies they had given earlier.

Does anyone know what earlier replies were given and why they were replaced?

Great question. I don’t know, but I do know this.

Initially, it appears the Society’s “use of their library” excuse was not in place.

Within a few days of the WT disassociation and prior to November 1st, which is the date of the letter you are referring to, published reports on the internet indicated that Pedro Candeias, spokesman for the AJW (Association of Jehovah’s Witnesses) in Portugal, was giving a different reason for the WT involvement with the UN.

It appears that the Portugese newspaper, Publico, published statements by Mr. Candeias to this effect:

The registry as NGO was made only to be able to give humanitarian help and defend the human rights in several countries of the world. “To reach those countries (referring to Angola, Bosnia, Georgia, Rwanda and other African and Latin American countries) was complicated, and for that reason it was necessary to registry the WTBTS in the UN.” Mr. Candeias went on to say that that the ‘registry” does not compromise the JW’s with any political involvement with the UNO and was not a ‘political maneuver’, but without the UNO, it would not be possible to distribute humanitarian help.

Certainly no one could fault the WT for wanting to provide humanitarian help or defend human rights. Most Witnesses would probably consider that a much better reason for ‘selling your birthright’ than just to have library privileges. It is also commonly known that many Christian humanitarian organizations are used as a “front” in order to promote Christianity in lands where they are not able to do so openly. So it would be advantageous to further the preaching work if the Society could make use of the privileges accorded to NGO’s in those countries. So why did the Society feel it necessary to “replace” their original response (or at least the response of the Portugese representative) with the “library” reason, if in fact that is what they did?

Again, I don’t know. But I have an opinion. The humanitarian defense ( which was likely the truth)would not silence criticism that the Society should NOT have agreed to publicize programs for the UN. (In view of past statements of the Society about UN ‘satanic propaganda” and the absolute condemnation of any religion who would support in any way the ‘disgusting thing‘, criticism and charges of hypocrisy would indeed be expected..) By saying that the whole purpose of association was just to use the library for research to write Awake articles, the focus is taken away from the fact that those articles were written to fulfill the commitment to the UN. (And the letter sent to the Society in 1992 from the UN makes plain that the main purpose of association is for the re-dissemination of information about the UN). By using the library reason, it would appear that the WT was just voluntarily writing articles about UN programs. That is my opinion.

Incidentally, an observant person will notice that the Society and Mr. Candeias always refer to their association with the UN as a “registry”, which is much less objectionable than saying they applied for association with - in the words of the June 15, 1955 WT - the “antichrist“. ( page 360)

Also, it is obvious that the Society wouldn’t want this ‘association’ publicized even if they felt there was nothing wrong with it. They knew that they would be called hypocrites by others and even Witnesses themselves would question such a relationship. So to say that they weren’t trying to keep it secret, but they just didn’t think to mention it for ten years, is somewhat naïve, in my opinion. Especially when you consider that they managed to mention that OTHER religious non-governmental orgs were associated with the UN,

*** g00 10/22 p. 31 Effort to Oust Vatican From UN ***
According to Ms. Kissling, “the appropriate role for the Vatican is that of a NGO—the same as all the other NGOs representing Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, Bahais and other religious organisations

Possibly the Society is telling the whole truth. But in view of their efforts to cover up their embarrassing blunders in the past, such as Beth Sarim and the Johann Greber incident, it is also entirely likely that we are not being told the whole story.

Isn't wonderful that everyone has opinions, That way you can say what ever you want.

but just having an opinion doesn't make it right.

Accusations are also just opinions.

1 Pet 2:21 In fact, to this [course] YOU were called, because even Christ suffered for YOU, leaving YOU a model for YOU to follow his steps closely. 22 He committed no sin, nor was deception found in his mouth. 23 When he was being reviled, he did not go reviling in return. When he was suffering, he did not go threatening, but kept on committing himself to the one who judges righteously.

Jehovah is the Judge. It is his opinion, and His recommended course of conduct we should follow.

"All who acknowledge and worship any other God than the Lord the Savior, Jesus Christ, who is Jehovah God Himself in human form, sin against this first commandment. Those also sin against it who persuade themselves of the actual existence of three Divine persons from eternity. For as they confirm themselves in that error, they become more and more natural and corporeal, and at length are unable to comprehend interiorly any Divine truth; and if they listen to it and accept it, they still defile it and cover it up with fallacies. They may therefore be compared to those who dwell in the lowest story or the cellar of a house, and in consequence hear nothing of the conversation of those who are in the second and third stories, because the floor above their heads keeps the sound from penetrating to them. [2] The human mind is like a house of three stories, in the lowest of which are those who have confirmed themselves in favor of three Gods from eternity, while in the second and third stories are those who acknowledge and believe in one God under a visible human form, and that the Lord God the Savior is He" (True Christian Religion n. 296).

The Watchtower Society aka Jehovah's Witnesses are a rediculous cult. Don't worry about what they do.
