Hello......While every case is different, I think it has to do with how long the person has been addicted. Even though they may have an enormous desire to kick their habit and been successful in doing so, the years they have spent being addicted have actually taken their ability to feel good away from them ..................permanently. They think that once they are free of their habit that everything will be wonderful and that they will feel just fine but the brain's chemistry has changed so much that the recovering addict reverts back to their old ways just to feel good again. It's tough to kick any addiction . but I have answered your question with only what I think about a persons' addiction to drugs. As to the others, sex and gambling, I think that a way a person has been raised and what they have been exposed to determines whether or not they become addicted to sex and all it takes is one big win at the track or casino for you to think that you are a winner. These activities provide a rush of adrenalin which is as addicting as any drug. They also say love is a drug providing as many highs and lows as any drug or activity you can name. Personally, I'd rather take my chances with this one ! Take care .......peace..........

Kay's in denial.
Some people are prone to addictive behaviour - I managed to quit smoking, then I later had problems with alcohol & overeating. I think have both of them under control.
I'm obsessive (maybe OCD), and I am intensive about my job (sotfware integration (SOA) designer). I drink lots of coffee in the am to get going & I like a six pack when I get home (3 hour round trip freeway commute) to relax). I'm also maybe facing redundnancy as a single income home-owner. I would swap wealth (?) in an instant for the "wife & 2 kids" scene - but at least I don't have problems with kids, to stress me further.
If you don't try & don't have stresses, it's easier to avoid addictions. It's easy to look for a way out, at the end of the day, when there's no obvious solution to the day's problem.
If you aren't on the edge - you're taking up too much room. If you are going to do something - do it to the best of your ability. Since leaving school, I've seen freinds & classmates settle, while I keep aspiring for more.
In the old days, I might have been classed as a type-A personality. At least I've never made the mistake of trying cocaine :-)

Some people are geneticly predisposed to addiction also the length of time addicted is also a key component to addiction the reward pleasure center of the brain is effected and the person is constantly looking for that first high which he'll never find again.

Most generally an addict of any sort is tired of who they have become and are willing to go to any lenghts to change. There usually is a life altering event associated with it though. ie. jail, finances, losing touch with family, something important to them. It has NOTHING to do with will power. They have to want it bad enough.

The differences in their will power and determination to end a habit. Also, another factor would be their support groups (if any). Do you have a habit that you want to quit?

Some have addictive "personalities".. it is how the brain is wired. and some don't.
It is why some drugs can be used to suppress these "needs".

The personal want to factor-how bad you want to and why you want to. Some have stronger persalities as well some are weaker. But if you want something bad enough you will be successful.

It's a matter of will power.
Some people quit stuff for another person who gives them strength...but alot of people quit because of health.
