I have a friend who is thinking about teaching there. Do you think the public schools and area are safe?

It is a high crime area. That shouldn't necessarily prevent your friend from teaching there, it just means to be aware of your surroundings. If your friend grew up in the city, he/she probably already knows to do this anyway. If he/she is not a city person, perhaps your friend should reconsider.

urban, higher than average crime rate still not as bad as say Camden or Newark or Trenton...but thats where the teaching jobs are, eh? Just as others suggest, she could make things safer by being more aware of her surroundings, etc. depends on what she is comfortable with it is not a comfy, safe suburban area, that is for sure...

Its a gritty industrial town. Not sure about the safety of the schools or the quality of the education.
