I think the reason people post questions here is because they wish to gather an assortment of opinions based upon personal experience. Or they are having difficulty finding a particular bit of information on the web
I find it unhelpful in the extreme to read answers that are prefaced with "This is just a guess...." or "It might be...." etc
So what prompts people to answer questions about which they have no knowledge?

PS. I understand that in this instance, "I think that" or "It might be" are perfectly appropriate, since I am soliciting opinions!

I believe that the people posting questions are looking for the more personal touch, interacting with another live human being, is more personable than "Google", and to gather other perspectives. As for the people that respond with "The Guess", or "Might Be" would be a rather polite way of saying, I really do not know, but I understand the situation, and it is also a safe response, to not look unintelligible to anyone out there watching.

Well, I suppose most people are only here for entertainment. I might post an answer that is a guess because sometimes those answers can be helpful. Especially if you're talking about questions that involve people like, how should I deal with my boyfriend, why did my boss do this, etc. If you asked a math question, I wouldn't post an answer that is a guess. ;)

Well, Think about it. If you thought you might know the answer to something dont you think it would be helpful to the person to maybe research your haunch? Maybe give them somewhere to start??? I dont think its rude unless the person outright says I dont know.

the glamour status of seeing their opinions posted on the screen... that and having the freedom to anonymously force-feed their opinions to people who may or may not agree.
