I do not think that forgetting is possable... But forgivness is and when one truely comes to the point of being able to forgive, honestly, there is a peace in the soul. Those of The True Christian Faith are seeking to achieve that. With the Help of The Holy Spirit it is possable for one to achieve some level of peace... it depends upon the level of comitment of the individual.
The cares of the world are constantly working against anyone seeking peace of any sort... It is good to have The help of The Holy Spirit in the struggle against the worlds assaults.
I accept email questions concerning the basics of The True Christian Faith. Here is a link to a page of mine on forgivness I you are interested. If you have a question you can contact me from my site.

I have a been a Christian for a number of years. God promises salvation, and finally eternal life where there will be no more tears
But, I have not been magically transported into some sort of illusionary existence, I still have to live with pain, my willingness to forgive others, and the horrible past that haunts me most days..It is much easier for me to get through it, knowing that Christ has my back though..

There is no soul. You don't have to forgive people, and you won't forget all the bad things that have happened to you.
Instead, just realize that most people are generally good, but there are some bad things that many do. Don't let those things affect your life. Move on. Give people the respect they deserve, but no more than that. Instead, work on your own character.

Just Ask God for his peace, it says in the Bible that he will give you peace that surpasses all understanding. Ask him to come into your heart and he'll take away all that pain and hurt that sometimes stops us from progressing in life. But when you ask him to do this you must mean it and you have to want to let him fix your situation and you have to want to let it go. Most of all you have to forgive, people say all of the time I'll forgive you but I won't forget. When we ask God to forgive us of our sins he does just that and the Bible says that he throws them in the sea of forgetfulness. If we don't forgive others God will not forgive us, it says so in the Bible. So just give it all over to God. It's a reason why you had to go through what you went through, God allowed you to go through this pain to prepared you for your destiny.

Give your life to God.

Basically you should understand and believe these things:
1. Heaven is a free gift-it cannot be earned or deserved.
2. Man is a sinner and cannot save himself.
3. God is merciful and doesn't want to punish us, but He is just so He must punish sin.
4. Jesus Christ was God and Man. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins and rose from the grave to purchase a place for us in Heaven.
5. Faith in Jesus Christ is the way to Heaven. This means trusting in Jesus Christ alone for eternal life. Rest on Christ alone and what He has done, not what you can do.
So transfer your trust to Christ, accept Him as your Savior, receive Him as Lord, and repent. If you pray these things to Him you will be saved! :-)
Romans 10:10,13 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. For, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
John 6:47 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life.
Luke 15:10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.

Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior and seeking God will help with the first 2, but I don't know of a way to forget what happened to you.

It always helps me to help people less fortunate than I am. It gives me perspective that i am still okay, in spite of being hurt, and fills the time until I am willing to forgive.

Forget? I don't think so.
But learn to love through Christ and not give victory to the bad things that have happened to you, now that is possible through Christ.

That would no doubt help, but easier said than done. Pray and ask God for His peace that passes understanding and joy unspeakable and full of glory. I hope you get both.
