I was always told a houseplant. Used to be a money plant to bring good luck moneywise. Nowadays it would be a bamboo, as this brings good luck and future guests are offered a shoot to spread the good fortune.

Usually a bottle of wine or a nice house plant. If the couple did not have a wedding reception and this is the first party after their marriage, then many people bring wedding-type presents to the housewarming party, such as appliances or monogrammed towels, etc.

You can get some ideas from redenvelope.com.

A bottle of wine, or a unique and useful kitchen gadget. If the home has a lawn, a lawn and garden inspired gift is nice.

something for the home... obviously... like a framed photo, a wine and cheese gift basket...

or if you have more than a few bucks, get a $25 or $50 home depot gift card and put it inside a nice greeting card. this way they can use it however they see fit.

I know someone who always gives a statue of an elephant with the trunk up....it's supposed to be a good luck piece (not typical, but a nice idea).

Whatever the hosts like to drink, be it beer, wine or spirits, or perhaps a basket of nibbles to eat for the party.

Bottle of wine, live plant, bouquet of flowers. Why not be atypical and original -- think of the recipient's personality.

If you know their kitchen colors, a table runner, placesettings, cloth napkins, dish towels, oven mitt/glove, and matching rug - any of these are nice to give.
