Now listen here you lot. Corned beef comes in square tins so that it fits neatly into sandwiches. You need the key to open the tin because some tin openers can't cope with the square tins. I like Corned Beef especially in Corned Beef Hash which I'm delighted to see you can now buy in M&S and you won't cut any fingers when you open it either.

It comes to you in a square can because it's the same can that the packers put it in. If I liked canned corned beef that much, I wouldn't refuse to buy it because of the shape of the can.
I never knew that corned beef was minging. I must warn my wife to not buy any while it's minging. The unminged kind is pretty good, though.

Is it because it wants to be different? Seriously though, I do agree though that a normal tin and tin opener would be better cos mine never seem to have a key on them!

Ah, modern youth!! Cut themselves to ribbons on a corned beef can. I believe the youth of today don't go in much for this meaty treat. It is more of an oldie's delight - from the times when there wasn't much else available in a can (war time excluded). Oldies have perfected getting the can open with the key or when it breaks off, with a knife or pair of pliers (and once with eyebrow tweazers!)
Argentinian meat canners wouldn't think of packing this treat in anything other than its original 19th century can.

Corned beef is beef brisket that has been soaked in prine. If you are getting it in a square tin then it would be canned. I see it alot in stores in vacuum sealed bags in the meat counter around St. Patrick's Day. Viva la Irish.

I fully agree with your comments, the key openers are lethal.
Also dont forget that in 1966 there was a big food scare and people died from contaminated corned beef from Argentina because it had been cooled down in a toxic river.

I don't know why it is this way. I do not use canned corned beef very often at all - I was making a rueben dip and decided to just use canned corned beef in it. Well it was a mistake - I cut my finger very badly trying to get the idiotic can opened!!!!!!!!!!

Beef is cut in slabs and the grain of it is not round, hence the square tins.

corned is short for cornered, if it was in a rounded tin, then it would be rounded beef, have no corners and not be in a square-ish can...
who wants to walk into a shop and ask for a rounded beef sandwich...

I would guess that it was made that way for a good reason, but why totally escapes me. It may have something to do with the time of its invention. Or it was used by people who didn't have can openers handy. Maybe soldiers or the people in war torn areas.
