Weeping and gnashing of teeth is a poetic way of saying those who are there ain't happy campers.

Hell is the absence of the sense of God's presence. You think you can't feel Him here and now, but He's there even if you withdraw from Him. In Hell, He withdraws from you. You'll know the difference but of course, by then, it'll be a bit late to rectify the condition.

I don't believe so.
Quite the contrary, returning to an animal state would seem to me like returning to a state of innocence. A state before man was chased from the Garden of Eden. I believe the gnashing of teeth has more to do with the anxiety and fear that would always fill the inhabitants of Hell.

Hell is usually conceived as a place ruled by evil forces. Now, what do people consider evil? People often consider people or things evil when they produce suffering, lack compassion and empathy and are ruthlessly selfish in their aims. If you looks at animals, they do share those evil traits for the most parts. They readily kill with no remorse for their prey. They fight amongst each other just for their own selfish needs for dominance and some (e.g. cats, hamsters) will actually eat their own young if they are hungry enough or if the offspring seems too runty to survive. If mankind as a whole held these traits, the world would be animalistic and hellish indeed.

Well, the movie theater in Hell shows Gigli and The Legend of the Lone Ranger.

Lots of gnashing of teeth for that one

I don't think reverting to an animal state is a negative thing. I would love to come back in another life as an animal instead of a human. Animals are better than us they don't hurt people or do bad things. But I think we have different religious beliefs.

I don't think that's what he meant. I'm pretty certain that the gnashing of teeth was more a reference of grief then any sort of de-evolution. However, it's most likely prudent never to find out!

Only about as much as I think losing a vast fortune and becoming poor might be considered reverting back to an animal state.

Heaven and Hell are concepts based in fear. Your question indicates its problems. The afterlife by reasonable people is many spheres (7) to which we all rise by our own personal spirituality. There are no miracles on death and there are no death bed confessions to save the soul. We have designed by our lives, the place we will occupy in the afterlife.

It is not eternal...there is progress from sphere to sphere through eternity, when you are ready to move and learn. As below, so above.

First.. well said, Gene John (above).

Second, if coming back as an animal is Hell, then I can't imagine what my cat did to deserve the life of utter luxury she lives!

Hinduism and beliefs in reincarnation often believe that you can come back as an animal if you are not a good person. So this is similar to your idea,
