hi all, i had a root canal done 4 days ago, i'm still feeling pain in this tooth (like nothing as changed) is this normal? - ive also got this filling at the back (i think its only temporary), so i'm not sure if hes going to crown it or what.

i don't rate my denist, he doesn't talk much just does the job and sends you on your way, ive got to go back in a month so not sure whats going to happen then.

ive got anti-biotics, but is the pain natural (like the tooth hasn't changed) for days afterwards?

(Get back to the dentist)
He needs to remove the rest of the root that contains nerve endings.

It's very normal to have discomfort with this tooth 24-48 hours after a root canal is done. Now, that being said, it sounds like this tooth is still a little ticked off about something. It could be that you have some infection still present, which can happen with teeth and a round of antibiotics will kick it's butt. It could be that the filling the placed in the back of the tooth is a bit too tall. So, if the pain hasn't improved by Monday, call them up and let them know. If it's the filling, they'll just need to smooth it down (very easy). Good luck

Firstly i'd check with your dentist why you had the RCT done in the first place. If you had a constant throbbing in that tooth it was more than likely decayed (carious). Typically and eventually the infection sets in at the base/apex of the tooth. During the RCT the inside of the tooth is clean and prepared and later filled. However, the infection at the apex may persist for several days or even weeks. And depending on the anaerobes- bacterial pathogens, the AB you were given may not be sufficient to neutralise the infection and it may persist---- pain. Eryromycin may be suggested??
RCT are not straight forward. precision within 1mm isrequired.

it is quite possible that another neighbouring tooth is also involved with the infection or possible a sinus problem which mimics dental infections or abscess. However assuming the dentist took a few radiographs will rule this out.
all the best, go see your dentist. especially if facial enlargement on that side (immediately- hospital stays are very expensive)

I had a root canel done 10 days ago and the pain is still the same. No change. Just like yours. 3 days ago my dentist gave me the strongest anti-biotics but it still did not help. As soon as the anti-biotics is gone (4-6 hours) the pain comes back just as much as it was 10 days ago. There is no relief at all. She did not take an X-ray to check my tooth. She just showed me the x-ray photo taken after the root canel done. She explained it might be due to a little extra cement filling left at the end of the root. Then just asked me to continue the pain killer. I know something is wrong but don't know what to do now. I think I'm another victim of a failed dental practice :(. The pain has not changed after 10 days, just like yours!

Don't want to worry you but when I had a root canal done, the dentist missed one of the roots. A normal tooth has 3 roots to take out but mine had 4 - was in agony until I went back. It might be worth checking with the dentist. He can look at x-ray. I think it is normal to have some pain for days after but not so many that you have to take pain killers for days on end.
Hope you feel better soon

I also had a root canal done 4 days ago, my tooth does not hurt. but the gum tissue around the tooth is very sensitive and sore.

But if your tooth is still hurting then there must still be some 'nerve' inside that he didn't get. Either call him back right away or go to a Dentist who specializes in root canals. They have to be done correctly or you will lose the tooth.

I feel bad for you going to a Dentist or any Doctor for that matter .. who will not talk to you. I have been going to my Dentist for 18 years and we are like friends.

Remember, with Doctors and Dentists..... somebody had to Graduate LAST in the class. You don't want to go to them.

If you don't like his attitude, his demeanor, his concern for you, all that kind of stuff, Then ' DUMP HIM' like a carton of sour milk.

Keep searching until you find a good one.

I was an RN, and I know how Doctors and the Medical field in general can be. Don't be intimidated.

OK firstly as others have said it is quite normal to feel some pain for a good few days after the treatment this is because the dentist has to be fairly invasive and it can annoy the nerves round about the area a fair old bit.

that said though i had root canal work done a number of years ago and there was a slight infection which dentist did not notice. because he was digging around in my jaw he actually spread the infection to my neighbouring tooth at root level. this was total agony and resulted in me having to have this neighbouring tooth extracted around a week later.
so in conclusion if the pain has not eased or has actually got worse after 10 days i recommend you return to your dentist.

Yes,some teeth hurt a lot after root canal.Take your antibiotics.Within 2 days your pain should be getting better. After a week you should feel the difference. If there is none, then there must be another tooth with the same problem. For Roth canaled teeth sometimes it takes months to calm dawn. But the pain should be very minimal, only when you bite on it.Ask questions to your dentist.I mean you pay for it so much,he should have some decency to let you know about some things.Really, you demand him to spend another 5 minutes with you, just to explain things.

he has obviously given u anti-biotics as there could be some recidual infection left!which is why u prob still have pain!.
if your going back again its prob for the second part of the root canal treatment, which means if the infection has gone he will then close the tooth with the root filling!u shouldnt really have pain though if youve already had the nerve removed???hope this is helpful good luck!! x

i had a root canal filling and there was a dull ache for a week afterwards. just keep taking the antibiotics and some pain killers for the pain. you will be pleased here to that i still have the tooth with the root canal filling, and it works just fine.
i would suggest you ask your dentist question about what he is going to do .
