Being a goth is just a culture thing. There are no defining features (other than wearing black). Most people I know who are into it (including my husband and his best friend) just do it because they like the clothes, like the makeup, the music, and like the fact that goths tend to be accepting of most people, because they themselves are so far outside the mainstream. There is nothing wrong with not being "normal"; there is so much variety in humanity that normal doesn't really exist. Some goths drink blood; so? Generally speaking they get it from other consenting adults, so who cares? I have never known a goth to pray for evil; most are too busy having fun to want to hurt someone.

First of all, there are "goths" who don't dress like the stereotypical ones. They look just like you and me, but have a more melancholy, tragically sensitive outlook on the world.
A lot of these "goths" you see do have a lot of family problems. If they say no, they're lying. I've known QUITE a few and they all talk shite about their parents.
No, they don't drink blood. Only psychotic people do. Pray for evil? I think a lot of "goths" are wrapped up in themselves and almost live as a character in a movie so they might pray for evil.
Bottom line, the gothic subculture is becoming more and more "mainstream" which totally goes against what a "goth" stands for. But as all subcultures that are adopted by millions, it was only a matter of time. Heck, even Shania Twain was "goth' in one of her videos....lol

There are many different "Goth" styles such as death rock, punk, androgynous, some Renaissance style clothes, or combinations of the above, most often with black attire, makeup and hair.
The goth subculture is a contemporary subculture prevalent in many countries. It began in the United Kingdom during the late 1970s to early 1980s in the gothic rock scene, an offshoot of the post-punk genre. The goth subculture has survived much longer than others of the same era. Its imagery and cultural proclivities indicate influences from nineteenth century Gothic literature, mainly through horror movies.
The goth subculture has associated gothic tastes in music and fashion. Gothic music encompasses a number of different styles. Common to all is a tendency towards a “dark” sound and outlook.
It is very difficult to become people to become "Goths"
The Goths were an East Germanic tribe who from the 2nd century settled Scythia, Dacia and Pannonia. In the 3rd and 4th centuries, they harried Byzantium and later adopted Arianism. In the 5th and 6th centuries, split into the Visigoths and the Ostrogoths, they established powerful follower-states of the Roman Empire in Iberia and Italy. The Visigoths launched one of the first major "barbarian" invasions of the Roman Empire from 263, sacking Byzantium in 267.[4] A year later, they suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Naissus and were driven back across the Danube River by 271. This group then settled north of the Danube and established an independent kingdom centered on the abandoned Roman province of Dacia.
The Ostrogothic kingdom persisted until 553 under Teia, when Italy briefly fell back under Byzantine control, until the conquest of the Langobards in 572. The Visigothic kingdom lasted longer, until 711 under Roderic, when it had to yield to the Umayyad invasion of Andalusia.
Although being either "Goth" or "Goths" is better than bing a "Chav"
I dont class myself as any of the above I am me, my cyber name "Vampire" comes from my tendancy to leave bite marks (as in love bite)

Because people's misconceptions protected me through high school. If they thought I was some crazy satan worshiping witch, they were less likely to mess with me. That and I'm comfortable dressing that way. Blood drinking isn't a goth thing, "normal" looking people can do that too. Praying for evil to happen? Doubt it.

To become a Goth:
1) Buy 2 lbs. of white makeup, black or dark maroon lipstick, black eyeliner, and a set of fanged choppers.
2)Purchase: Female: Long, tight-fitting, black gown,
black stockings, black lacey
gloves.
Male: Black tunic or flowing sleeved
shirt, black pants, and hat is
optional.
Get either very dark wine or grape juice, add a few drops black food coloring. Paint fingernails black.
Howl at the moon or bray at an eclipse. Bite only close friends(post HIV test, ofcourse).
Goths are just having a fashion crisis. Satanists do the evil bit. What you need to ask is, when to wear garlic.

Lets answer your questions one at a time;
1. Why people want to be goths? Because it's different than the mainstream and the idea of darkness and mystery and pessimism seems cool to them
2. They don't like to be typical. There is no such thing as 'normal'.
3. No, and no. You're thinking of vampires. They don't exist.

If your asking that you shouldn't be one.
You don't go to a recruitment office or something.
You tend to likea certain type of music, and not becuase its fashionable, becuase you relate to the lyrics and because you like the style they play in... You then decide that you like your clothes to be black becuase you don't want to be a chav. You know you don't fit in with the other kids at school, becuase you read for leisure and not becuase a teacher is making you. If you fit this then congratulations, you are one of the chosen few...but from this question I am guessing not.
Sorry, I don't mean to be harsh, but if your asking this question you should not 'do it'.
You'll spend all your money on 'Black lipstick and dog collars (which no one with taste would wear anyway) then as soon as Evanescence go out of the charts you'll be back in your clothes from H&M.
