Bathe them in Dawn dish liquid will kill any live fleas on the dog, but doesn't protect them from flea eggs. You really can not get any better though than those you get from your vet. I know the can be kinda pricy, but it is better than paying all the money to get rid of fleas once they get into your home. I have had pretty good luck buying Frontline from the DR. Fosters and Smith website.

I have found that nothing compares to Advantage Plus. I know it is expensive, but it works the best. All the baths in the world won't keep the fleas off the dog. They will always come back. I have tried everything under the sun, including peppermint oil and garlic to get rid of fleas and after spending money on flea shampoos, flea spray, collars and powders, I have discovered that it ends up being cheaper to get the Advantage.
Advantage protects from mosquitoes also, which cuts down on the chances for heart worms. It really pays for itself in the long run.

You might want to consider treating your yard too with something called "Over and Out" you can get it at home depot and it has the same active ingredient as frontline. Frontline, available from the vet, works superbly and may be more expensive than you like but consider your pet's health and comfort.
