Its because they don't read enough. Reading the newspaper and books vastly improves your language skills. Keeping a dictionary (real or internet) handy is also a very good idea. Look up any words you encounter that you don't understand and you'll expand and advance your comprehension and you vocabulary (and spelling).

Because we live in America where grammar, spelling and schooling in general are sub-par. Nobody even reads books anymore and video games don't teach you anything about vocabulary and spelling. No one cares if they know how to spell because they think Spellcheck will fix everything for them.
The human resources manager at my company can't spell for s**t and has other people do her work for her.

Well, not sure about everyone else, but my son has issues with spelling in part because his teachers are specifically told they are not supposed to correct children's spelling and grammar because we wouldn't want to hurt the little darlings' feelings... Sigh. And people ask why I cannot stand the public school system...

I believe that so many people are horrible at spelling because noone makes them get better at it. We've all become so dependant on things like spellcheck that we never bother to learn to do it ourselves. It also isn't addressed enough in schools. If you allow children and teens to misspell words and never make them correct their errors, then they will never learn to spell correctly.

What worries me is they not only can't spell they don't understand the concept of the spell check icon.

It amazes me that my son has brought home vocabulary tests that have words spelled wrong that the teach has marked as correct

I don't know, I think most of them are just too lazy to proof read before they hit the 'submit' button....it drives me nuts when half of their words are spelled wrong.
