To protect Arjuna from the wrath of Karan & Drona

Once when arjuna prided that his arrows could send karna's chariot 10 yojana away, karan's arrows could only move his chariot to 2 yojanas.

Krishna signed and hanuman left his chariot, and with one of Karan's arrows his chariot moved 20 yojanas away..and arjuna's pride was shattered

Hanuman protected Arjuna because Krishna was his charioteer

Arjun encounters Lord Hanuman in the forest during the Pandava's vanvas. Hanuman tests Arjun and impresses upon him to be humble and not to be proud of his own prowess. During this interaction, Hanuman also agrees to bless Pandavas in the forthcoming war. So Arjun keeps a mascot resembling Hanuman in his chariot.

The flag was on the top of Arjuna’s chariot was marked with Hanuman. Hanuman, fought for Lord Ramchandra. Arjuna is fighting for Krishna. So he is also following the footsteps of Hanuman.
Vaishnavism is like that. “Mahajano yena gata sa pantha”. Vaishnava should follow his previous authority (Mahajana). We don’t manufacture ideas. We simply accept the behavior or the activities of previous acharyas. There is no difficulty.

So in the fighting principle, Arjuna is fighting for Krishna. He is following the previous fighting acharya, Hanumanji. Therefore he has depicted his flag with Hanuman, that “Hanumanji, kindly help me. I have come here to fight for Lord Krishna. You fought also for the Lord. Kindly help me.”
So any activities of the Vaishnava, they should always pray to the previous acharya, “Kindly help me”. Vaishnava is always thinking himself helpless. And begging help from the previous acharya. In such Humility service to God is performed.
