The modern scientific method works this way:
[1] ask a question that can be answered by experiment;
[2] suggest an answer to your own question ( = make a hypothesis);
[3] design & carry out an experiment to test whether or not your hypothesis is correct.

When a hypothesis has been tested by experiment and the results proven true several times at various times and places with similar results, that answer becomes a Theory. Two notable examples are The Theory of Gravity, first proposed by Newton and refined several times since, and the Theory of Evolution, first proposed by Darwin and also refined since. Both of these Theories are commonly accepted within the scientific community as true statements of the way our world (universe) actually works because the Theses behind them have been demonstrated and proven true time and again. They are not universally acknowledged as true by Christian fundamentalists, but most Christian fundamentalists are not scientists.

The simple answer to your question is: do an experiment.

It depends on whether you take an Empircist or Rationalist approach. Empiricists must build up a body of evidence through experiment and observation whereas Rationalists believe that theories can be proven by following a series of logical conclusions (all put rather simply). It all really depends on who you are proving it to. Personally I'm an Empiricist so I would like proof not conjecture.

There are no facts to prove in a theory , it is all based on evidence. Therefore if the evidence changes the theory was never a fact.
