I have a 10-year old daughter. A great gift is a razor scooter (about $30). She also likes: Bratz ($10-18), Gameboy games ($20 - Raven and Spongebob), CDs, rollar-blades, a lava lamp (Target), I-dog, accessories (earrings, purse) or any craft activity (Michaels is a good place to find these cheap).

If she likes humor, you would possibly want to attempt Jim Benton's 2 sequence, pricey Dumb Diary, and Franny ok. Stein. If she's an avid reader, she's probable waiting for the sequence of unlucky activities sequence, that's humorous too. you won't be able to bypass over with books through Beverly Cleary and Judy Blume, as others have suggested. Others already suggested that would want to be large are Holes, and Bud, no longer pal. seem for the Anastasia Krupnik sequence through Lois Lowry. also, The no longer-in simple terms-all and various relations (and some sequels) through Betsy Byars.

I have the same problem finding stuff for my sons friends. I usually buy a 35 mm camera (usually about 5 dollars at Walmart), a roll or two of film, and a 5 dollar gift card so he can get the pictures developed. The kids love it because they think cameras are grown up things, and its really cheap for the parents to buy more film and get it developed.

-Perhaps a fun dance CD. On a recent field trip my car full of 5th graders jammed to Crazy Frog. The girls especially got into it.

-You can find some inexpensive hair accessories and jewelry at Claire's at the mall. Be sure to select hot styles, not cute.

-Put together a manicure set from Walmart: clippers, file, press-on nail stickers, a few fun colors of polish like hot pink, blue, and purple. Tie it up in a pretty sack.

-Spa type items marketed to young girls. My daughter especially likes the body glitter spray.

My 8 year old grandaughter is into web sites that you can dress up model dolls such as hair, jewelry, etc. Maybe you can find a cd that has that type of stuff on it as well as a few games.
Girls like Hanna Montana, Raven, Bratz dolls, Alley & AJ (singers), etc. any type game or compter game of one of those would be a good idea...

There are these dolls called "bratz" that children aound that age seem to like, but if she is more mature then the typical child, she may not be interested in anything like that. Ask her mom, I'm sure she'd know something that her own daughter wants.

a nice bead-jewelry kit was my first thought, too - maybe even a little bracelet-making board (it has a little channel cut out in it so you can line all the beads up before you start threading them on!) and some high-quality beads (not the cheap plastic ones)...or a gift card for a clothing store?

Ask her mother for some ideas.... If that doesn't work maybe a gift certificate to a place where she can pick something she likes wrapped with a watch or writting kit.

Kids make-up and jewellery. Lizzie McGuire is a hit with my daughter. Also found that gift cards work, as she can get what she wants. Arts and craft things also work.
