its the trend now. this is what appliance companies came up with a few years ago in order to charge u an enormous amount of money for the same thing that u can get in white or black for a few hundred bucks. That being said if u want stainless steel appliances 3 things u need to know. 1 they are labor intensive!! if u have kids or a lot company u do not want stainless. U will never B able to leave the kitchen cause U will constantly be wiping it. It shows every single hand print, smudge, if u walk by it and rub up against it that shows too. 2 If u insist on stainless steel there is an alternative that does not require as much wiping. its called the stainless look u have to wipe but not as much. 3 This is a trend that is already diminishing so if u are going to put your money in a trendy piece of furniture find out what the next thing is and go with that because this is one is about dead.

Judging from the answers given so far I think most people must not ever think about what they buy. No it is not just for the looks and ease of cleaning. Stainless steel is exactly what the name implies. A steel alloy that extremely resists rusting and most material will not stain the metal. Normal steel would rust very rapidly and be stained by many chemicals. A fridge made of normal steel would not last very long as the rust would eat through the thin metal in very little time. That is why older appliances were coated with baked on enamel Depending on the quality of the stainless steel it will last for many years with no signs of corrosion and still look good if it has reasonable care. In the long run it would save you money.
You most likely have seen iron and steel that was very rusty so would you like your table ware made of that material. Eating food with a very rusty spoon would not be what I would like. Even some of the appliances that are blue, green, and other colors are made with stainless steel coated with enamel paint.

Stainless steel appliances are easier to clean and they look really nice, the only difference is the price, they cost $300-$800 (depending on the brand) more than a regular surfaced appliance, and they have the same equipment and looks on the inside. If you like the look of stainless steel, and you don't want to spend all that money, you can actually give your own appliances the same face lift. In fact you can get the materials at any Do-It-Yourself-Store.

For the price of them they are not better than other fabricated metal. They are more pleasing to the eye. Consumer reports reported that you will pay more for stainless steel and the metal alone will out live the motor and electrical units. Simplify form: You buy a dishwasher and the inside of it is stainless steel, the inside will out last the motor etc.. I am having a hard time explaining, to early in the morning.
Some people don't like the metal because they feel it is cold. I don't understand why people say it is easy to clean, I have to buy the stainless steel cleaning spray to make it shine. I guess I don't let my appliances get nasty were they will rust or stain. if they start to rust i guess it would be time for a new one..

The cool, sleek look of stainless steel remains a hot item for today's kitchens.
You've probably eaten with stainless steel utensils, cooked in a stainless steel pot, or washed dishes in a stainless steel sink. Today, you can find stainless steel popping up throughout the kitchen from major appliances, counter tops and cabinet fronts to drawer pulls and wall tiles.
It is better to used in the appliances for it is not easily getting rust and it is very to clean. And most of it looks pretty and neat,.

Actually, the finish is much easier to clean and it does look better cosmetically. They last a long time, too. That's why so many commercial items come out in stainless. I replaced my double oven with a Kitchen Aid double, stainless oven after flooding for Hurricane Rita (Yes, I live in South Louisiana) and will replace my other appliances after they expire with stainless. They are terrific.
Of course my fridge and washer and dryer are Amanas with stainless steel drums so they may last a very, very long time. That's why I bought them in the first place. So I may stay with the white enamel for a while as they are great quality, also. Invest well and pay less later on repair and upkeep whatever you buy.

Durability is the most important property, the aesthetics are not the main reasons. The surface is both easy to clean and relatively non-stick. The older stoves that were covered with enamels became discolored and allowed penetration of moisture to enter in tiny pores and the appliance rusted from inside out, whereas stainless steel is non-porous. In some appliances, stainless steel is used for conductivity. It does not conduct heat as well as copper and that is why use often see pots and pans with a copper-plated bottom. Most implements used in the kitchen are crafted of stainless steel for easy cleaning and some grades of stainless steel keep an edge well and is used for knives and cleavers. Surgical suites use a lot of stainless steel for easy cleaning but also its resistance to corrosive materials. Many bathroom fixtures such as privacy stalls use stainless steel to prevent vandalism, and various paints and markers can be removed quickly.

Stainless Steel has redeeming qualities about it....If it is high quality stainless steel it will never rust. This is why commercial kitchens and food processing plants are required by law to be out fitted with stainless appliances. And hospitals are required to be out fitted with an even higher quality of stainless. Surgions tools are made of surgical stainless steel. The reason why it does not rust is because it has, if any at all, very low amounts or iron in it.
Iron is what oxidizes in metal to give it that red rust. The higher amount of chromium in stainless steel is what gives it its better quality I belive.

They are more durable-almost impossible to damage. And they're clean-up is a breeze. It's why most restaurants use stainless steel prep tables. It's non-porous so bacteria and contaminants are more easily gotten rid of. Plus for a few dollars on some mineral oil they polish right up. Household usage I would venture to say is mostly appearance. Stainless steel appliances when kept polished are beautiful.

Question should be are stainless steel appliances better not "why are" because that is saying they are better which they probably are not. Just a different appearance like having a red or blue appliance or what ever. Buy a well known brand and you shouldn't go far wrong.
