Yesterday, a man and a woman knocked on my door while I was reading a good book. Evidently, they were going through the neighborhood and witnessing to people.
First, they asked me if I went to church. I said that I used to, but I don't go very often anymore because after a while it got to where I was hearing the same thing every Sunday. Their eyes got kind of wide, and they told me that I needed to keep the Sabbath holy. Then, they started quoting some verses from Revelation--the ones about how those whose names are not in the Book of Life will be cast into the Lake of Fire.
I was going to ask them what that had to do with me, since I actually have been baptized. But they just kept going on and on, and when they finally shut up they gave me a flyer that had their church's name and address on it along with a Chick Tract.
Why do so many Christians get like this? I don't see many Pagans, Jews, etc. that are like this. I'm sure there are some, but I don't seem to come across them.

Why do they think that knocking on a stranger's door and telling her that she's going to rot in Hell unless she does what they say is going to warm her heart towards them and what they say?

Damian: Huh? No offense, but I don't think you read my question very carefully. In it, I specifically said that I used to go to church, and have been baptized. I just don't go very often anymore because I stopped hearing anything new when I went, and I no longer saw a reason to get up early every Sunday to go hear it. And I was offended by what they said because it was judgemental and insulting, telling me I was going to rot in Hell unless I did just what they told me to. And I suppose THEY think they are going to Heaven?

I guess it just comes with the Biblical instruction to go out and spread the word. Unfortunately, a lot of Christians are unable to do this without being intrusive, self-righteous, and condescending.
If it happens again, I would advise just thanking them for taking the time to share with you and wish them a good day, and then close the door. I wasn't there, but it sounds like they were being kind of rude, and you don't have to put up with being berated for worshiping in a different way. You already explained to them that you believed and had been baptized, and they still insisted on going off on some holier-than-thou tirade. Contrary to what other posters have said, I think THEY are the ones that need the talking-to, not you.

Christianity is essentially a criminal business enterprise... in fact, it is the world's longest running and most successful Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) scam. The product they are selling is the illusion of 'salvation'... and the 'pay plan' doesn't kick in until after you're dead. Meanwhile the VICTIMS (having been deceived into believing that it is their God-given duty) are out there busily recruiting MORE victims. What a racket! FORTUNATELY, it only works on those who are gullible enough, and sufficiently lacking in critical thinking skills, to fall for it, and buy in to the prepackaged delusion. UNfortunately, THAT accounts for about 75% of the population of the USA. (There are a lot more people who DON'T know how to think properly than there are people who DO know how to think properly.) That is why there are a lot more religious people in the USA than there are 'Free-thinkers'... including Atheists. Also, Christians are generally too dense to realize that proselytizing (spreading the 'good news') is a key element of the Christian MLM MARKETING PLAN, which was instituted after Christianity lost the political power that had previously allowed them to simply torture and kill anybody who did not comply. Now, they obliviously try to just pester and annoy people to death, through persistent obnoxiousness. If you stop to think about it, you will realize that Christians are very much like the Borg, on Star Trek Next Generation: "You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." I would not be surprised to learn that thoughts of Christianity provided the 'creative spark' for the Borg concept.
Also, they are so gullible and non-rational that their puppet masters are able to convince them that when they tell you that you're doomed to spend eternity in hell unless you repent, they are NOT judging you. They will claim that Jesus has already done that... and all they're doing is delivering the message.
These people have their brains tied in knots... and they are quite immune to the influence and effects of such trivialities as facts, reason, logic and critical thinking.

The gospel will be preached in all the world then Jesus will return as it says in Matthew. We want the word out and everyone to hear the Truth and make their final decision for or against God. Those Christians who came to your door were Seventh Day Adventists I believe, right? They have the truth and maybe you should have listened more to what they had to say. Why are you so offended if they share God with you? Are you afraid that you might start accepting Jesus and it will ruin your life? You are not going to live forever what are you doing to prepare for the end? You might die tomorrow or even today why don't you even care about what is Truth and what is the purpose of everything?

For starters, I've knocked on peoples' doors and testified of Christ to them. I feel like there is definitely a right way and a wrong way of doing it. There are people out there looking to find a connection with Christ that they don't have. These people are grateful for the things that people that do go door to door bring them. But it should never be forced on someone.
They have no right to preach hell fire and damnation to someone that they have no right to judge. The only one that can truly state that someone is going to the Lake of Fire is Christ.
I guess people go door to door because they understand or feel how their connection with God has brought something worth sharing into their life. If properly motivated they will want to share this with other people so that they might, if desired, have these same good feelings.
I don't agree with forcing your religion down someones throat or bible bashing or whatever you want to call it. But there are people who wait and hope that someone with answers to their questions about God will show up. If you aren't one of those people then be understanding and politely say you're not interested and pay no heed to the response given. I'm sorry that you had such a bad experience.

Sadly, it's because they don't read the bible. Jesus says only those the Father gives to him can come to him. So rather than beating people over the head, they need to be praying. Asking the Father for conversion of hearts.

The reason they behaved that way is that they are insufficiently Christian. In fact, keeping the sabbath is unnecessary. In addition, Christ Jesus commanded that his disciples concentrate on sharing GOOD NEWS of God's Kingdom.
The experience discussed in this question certainly did not involve Jehovah's Witnesses, who dominate the global preaching work. Worldwide, more than 6.5 million preach publicly each month.
(Acts 5:42) Every day in the temple and from house to house they continued without letup teaching and declaring the good news about the Christ, Jesus.
(Acts 20:20) I did not hold back ...from teaching you publicly and from house to house
In fact, the bible most closely associates being "Christian" with preaching about Christ and Christ's teachings. Review all three times the bible uses the term "Christian" and note that the context connects the term with:
"declaring the good news"
'teaching quite a crowd'
'open eyes, turn from dark to light'
"uttering sayings of truth"
"persuade"
"keep on glorifying"
(Acts 11:20-26) [The early disciples of Jesus] began talking to the Greek-speaking people, declaring the good news of the Lord Jesus... and taught quite a crowd, and it was first in Antioch that the disciples were by divine providence called Christians.
(Acts 26:17-28) [Jesus said to Paul] I am sending you, to open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God... Paul said: “I am not going mad, Your Excellency Festus, but I am uttering sayings of truth and of soundness of mind. ...Do you, King Agrippa, believe the Prophets? I know you believe.” But Agrippa said to Paul: “In a short time you would persuade me to become a Christian.”
(1 Peter 4:14-16) If you are being reproached for the name of Christ, you are happy... But if he suffers as a Christian, let him not feel shame, but let him keep on glorifying God in this name
The encouraging preaching work makes it clear that the relatively small religion of Jehovah's Witnesses are by far the most prominent followers of Christ:
(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded

Some believe that it is their job to "save" everyone else. Oh, and a Chick Tract isn't christian. I've read them. Nothing but hateful spew and garbage. Anyone who believes in those things are not christian, but hate mongers who are everything bad about christianity.

Alot of Christians get confused and think they're actually doing what's best! They think they're the ones who have to convert the whole world! Jesus said to plant the seed and let God do the rest!!!

[2] He who knows nothing of the internal sense of the Word, knows no otherwise than that by "bloods" in the Word are signified bloods; and that by "shedding blood" is merely signified killing a man. But the internal sense does not treat of the life of man's body, but of the life of his soul, that is, of his spiritual life, which he is to live forever. This life is described in the Word in the sense of the letter by such things as belong to the life of the body; namely, by the flesh and blood. And because the spiritual life of man exists and subsists through the good which is of charity and the truth which is of faith, therefore in the internal sense of the Word the good which is of charity is meant by "flesh," and the truth which is of faith is meant by "blood." And in a still more interior sense, the good which is of love to the Lord is meant by "flesh," and the good of love toward the neighbor is meant by "blood." But in the supreme sense, which treats of the Lord alone, "flesh" denotes the Divine good of the Lord, thus the Lord Himself as to Divine good; and "blood" denotes the Divine truth proceeding from the Lord, thus the Lord as to Divine truth. These things are understood in heaven by "flesh and blood" when a man is reading the Word; in like manner when he attends the Holy Supper; but in this the bread is the flesh, and the wine is the blood, because by "bread" the same is signified as by "flesh," and by "wine" the same as by "blood."
