The lime cuts the tequila flavor and is a natural acid that helps cleanse your mouth. Actually, limes are used wtih many drinks that involve other liquors. A vodka tonic has a lime as garnish, as does a gin and tonic. As for beer, some people add the acidity to beer by drinking red beer, which contains tomato juice. All I know is it makes it taste better, just like salt or pepper on your eggs.

Apparently you have not tasted tequila versus beer or vodka. Lime kills the taste after the shot. Some people like the taste of beer and vodka has very little taste. That is my opinion.

It has more of a bite (or burn) to it when you drink it. The lime mellows the throat and stomach.
