If I have a picture of a guitar and it has a scene behind it, but I want to "black out" the background, can I do that with cutting/or cropping it? My issue with that is I can never seem to cut the lines close enough and then it looks choppy. Thank you!

the best way is to enlarge the picture to 400 or 500 percent or more so you will be working with pixels then you can just remove the background
an example just for you with a guitar

the above example i cheated on as the original background was so uniform i used magic eraser tool but i notice it is a wee bit choppy too so i would draw around the guitar first at a larger size then do the magic background eraser -was just doing this fast for you as an example hope you liked it the guitar liked it hes on vacation now on the sunny shores of hawaii
you can use black colour or the background eraser and then fill background black or save with no background as a gif and put on a black background page hmm

Nice link irishtek (2 below mine) saved it in my favs

hope i helped

This site shows you three possible techniques to remove backgrounds.

They are in a movie format too!

There are other techniques, my favorite is to use alpha channels for complicated background removals, like with hair.

Use the pen tool. the pen tool is kinda difficult but it makes the edges of the guitar look really smooth when its done.
