Jiu Jitsu is a "grappling" martial art, or street fighting. There's a lot of on-the-ground techniques. I do Officer Safety Training for State Probation & Parole Officers in Middle TN, and all our techniques are ripped straight from Jiu Jitsu (hope I'm spelling it right). All the mainstream martial arts are healthy to practice (American Martial Arts, Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, etc.), but I've just heard from numerous sources that Jui Jitsu is the most real-world form of self defense.

All true martial arts should offer real life self-defense techniques.
Some have been so commercialized by bad teachers that they have lost this aspect. So, it is on a school to school to basis.
Walk into a school and check it, do not judge a school by style alone. Besides, the quality and frequency of your training will far outweigh the style of your training. Also, the gentleman that trains officers cited Jujitsu as real world effective and it is. However, I think this is coming from a law enforcement perspective. Please remember that officers have to detain people with as little injury as possible. The threat of lawsuits is very real to them. In the old world this was not a concern, so striking arts were acceptable. Police cannot very well bash a suspects face in with a series of reverse punches so they resort to grappling.
Improving the heart and soul? I study an Okinawan art and the first goal is the perfection of character. I am not sure every style emphasis's this aspect of the arts.

My best advice is to not seek a good style, instead seek a good place to train. If you decide one style has what you want but the only school that teaches it near you is garbage than you just sold yourself short.

For self-defence for what?

Being able to kick the crap out of someone in a bar or self-defence where your life is really at stake and not just your ego.

For self-defence then the most logical in today's society would be a firearm with a CCW permit and knowing how to use it and how to avoid bieng "tied up" or bieng alert and not taken by surprise.
Next to that any small concealable weapon like a knife or small metal baton or something (depending on the laws of your state of course) is good.

For ego-defence any style that trains seriously in realistic situations and has a good teacher will be good.

For body the best thing is to hit the gym, for soul it depends on the person.

Here are a list of my favorite things that improve the soul:
1- Money
2- More money
3- Even more money
4- Sex with a hot chick
5- Laughter and comedy
6- Music (except country which is not music)
7- Art

The only people who say "there is no best art" are the ones that do ineffective karate, kung fu, and tae kwon do.

The most punishing and devestating striking art is Muay Thai. The best art for take downs is Judo. The best art for ground fighting is, without a doubt, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

All three of these arts incorporate sparring into every single lesson. Go to a tae kwon do, kung fu, or karate class and you'll spend all night punching and kicking the air and "point sparring." Those arts are a total waste of time, money, and give you a false sense of security. They are more just movements like dancing than actual fighting/self-defense.

As for soul and body I'd say Church, etc, self help books are great, surrounding yourself with positive people with a winning attitude, not hanging around losers or negative people and strive to be your best.

This is about the first time that I have seen that most of the answers say there is no single best martial art, it is what style works best for the individual. I think its great to see more people on here are finally saying that.

The best M/A. is whatever works best for you.So shop around, ask questions. Do they spar or just do forms. Any instructor who cannot give you a history of his/her art that goes back at least 100 years would not be a good place to train. I like the Chinese internal systems. My teacher can give me a lineage from him back to the village or the General or the monk who started each system.

there is no "best" Martial Arts discipline, they are all good in teaching you self defense; there isn't one discipline better than another and they ALL have their strengths and weaknesses, it's how you train, if you train poorly or with a poor attitude, you'll get poor results, if you train and train with a good frequency and good quality, you'll get quality results.

they ALL will also improve you in mind and strengthen your body, give you better confidence, flexibility, and peace of mind.

1. Any style that train realistic.

2. Church is for that. I would be very scare if my instructor start to preach about soul and spirit since it's a good sign he's trying to brain wash you.
