A benefit dinner is usually put together to raise funds for a specific cause. The money that is raised through the dinner is then donated to the cause for which it was obtained.

A public supper, that i have never heard of, what it makes me think of is a social gathering where the public is invited to enjoy dinner together. It may or may not have a benefactor. Good luck with your quesiton hope i was of some help.

I've never heard of a public supper??
A benefit dinner is when a group or organization hosts a fancy dinner to raise money for a specific cause; people attending the dinner generally pay more than the meal is actually worth (sometimes hundreds of dollars more) because they want to support the cause. Sometimes the food, decorations, space, or entertainment are provided at a lower cost by companies as an "in-kind" donation to the cause.
This can be a very effective means of fundraising.

Benefit is the key word, a group is trying to make money for a certain cause so the money that you will paying for dinner actually goes to the benefit. A public supper may have topics that deal with your community, and you may be asked to bring a dish to pass.
