My wife and I get them (always while sleeping) and sometimes they last several minutes, in the legs and feet. I'v heard they're common but would like to know the source and what can be done to avoid them.

Sometime is it cause of low potassium. a simple blood test would determine that.

one cause is tetany, low calcium in your blood.
